There is a direct flight to Phonsavan from Vientiane, Lao Airlines operates flights from Wattay International Airport (VTE) in Vientiane to Xieng Khouang Airport (XKH) in Phonsavan. The flight takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour. Buses and minivans from Vientiane to Phonsavan take about 10-12 hours. They can be booked at bus stations or through travel agencies in Vientiane. However, the journey from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan takes around 8-10 hours by bus or minivan. This option provides scenic views but can be quite long and tiring.
- Archaeological Sites: Explore the mysterious stone jars scattered across the plateau, dating back to the Iron Age. There are 3 sites to see as following.
Site 1 (Ban Ang): The largest and most accessible site with over 300 jars. It also features a cave believed to have been used as a crematorium.
Site 2 (Hai Hin Phu Salato): Known for its scenic views, this site has around 90 jars spread over two hills. It offers a more intimate experience compared to Site 1.

You can travel to Pakse by fly direct from Vientiane 1.5 hours. Or you can fly direct from Bangkok also. If you want to take a bus, 10-12 hours from Vientiane is operate every day. If travel from Bangkok by train or bus must take from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani 10-12 hours, then cross border from there around 2-3 hours to reach Pakse.

- Wat Phu: A UNESCO World Heritage site with Khmer ruins dating back to the 5th century.

Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. It’s a bustling city with a mix of colonial architecture, historic sites, and modern development. It is so different from Siem Reap, more high buildings and more traffic. However, people are friendly every I go, they are welcome all tourists to visit their country. However, not everyone is nice to you, be cautious for your own safely. Last time I went to Phnom Penh in 2018, I hired a private tour guide to pick me up, let’s say I had him taken me around the whole trip I was there. The first day in Phnom Pehn, I forgot my passport at a simcard booth. Luckily, they contacted my tour guide and returned my passport that day at the hotel.
There are direct 1-hour flight from Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. Flying is easy way to do and I would choose this one. However, you can take bus also both from Bangkok 12-14 hours and Ho Chi minh city 6-7 hours. Depending where you traveling from, Click if you need a private tour or tickets from us !

If you have a few more extra days in Cambodia. I would recommend you to visit Sihanoukville to relax at the beach. Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is Cambodia’s premier beach destination. Located on the country’s southwestern coast, it is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical islands, and a relaxed atmosphere.
You can travel to Sihanoukville from Phnom Pehn and Siem Reap by air 1 hour. Bus from Phnom Pehn can reach there around 6-7 hours but from Phnom Pehn will take 10-12 hours. It is up to your schedule how much time you have. I am sure you will have a good time exploring the city and get the most out of its atmosphere, cultural and memory wise.
What to see in Sihanoukville;
- Beaches: Relax on the beautiful beaches like Otres Beach and Serendipity Beach.
- Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem: These nearby islands offer pristine beaches and snorkeling opportunities.
- Kbal Chhay Waterfalls: Located about 16 kilometers from the city, these scenic waterfalls are a popular day trip destination.
Sihanoukville is a great destination for beach lovers and those seeking a mix of relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re lounging on the beaches, exploring tropical islands, or visiting nearby natural attractions, Sihanoukville offers a diverse range of experiences for travelers.
