Traveling in Thailand can be hectic at times, but an efficient way to get around on your vacation is to travel by train. Train travel in Thailand is abundant, quick, and can bring you to many new and interesting locations. You can take the train for one-day trips to places like Ayutthaya, Mahachai or Kanchanaburi, or go to northern Thailand like Chiang Mai or go south for sample routing.

Train Travel Near Bangkok 

Mahachai

Quick offers a day trip to the sea market and more. This expedition takes you just outside Bangkok to Mahachai by train. It is an authentic experience that allows you to travel like locals, and in fact the train itself with no doubt have many locals on it as well as you go. 

The tour brings you to the largest wet sea market and uses a variety of other traveling methods such as ferry, boat, and boarding on tricycle to view the local town and visit important landmarks.

Bangkok-Ayutthaya 

Ayuttaya is a city full of history that is also accessible by train. It is located just to the east of the magnificent ruins of the Ayutthaya Kingdom which are always worth a look. Ayutthaya itself is a modern city, but still manages to boast architectural splendors that captivate and draw you into history. It’s amazing to go and see as you will be able to experience historical and modern Thai life within Ayutthaya.

The train departs from Hua Lampong station, the journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the type of train and stops along the way. The train will arrive at Ayutthaya Station, located near the historical park and main attractions. From there, you can easily access temples, ruins, museums, and other sites of historical significance.

Traveling from Bangkok to Ayutthaya by train offers a convenient and enjoyable way to explore the ancient capital’s rich history and cultural attractions. Whether you’re visiting for a day trip or planning a longer stay, the train journey provides a relaxed and scenic travel experience.

Bangkok-Kanchanaburi (River Kwai)

The train journey starts from Thonburi Station in Bangkok (not Hua Lamphong). You can take the BTS Skytrain to Wongwian Yai Station and then a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride to Thonburi Station. 

There are several trains operating this route, including ordinary, rapid, and special express trains. The journey takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on the type of train and stops along the way.

The journey from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi offers scenic views of rural Thailand, including rice paddies, villages, and glimpses of the famous River Kwai. The train will arrive at Kanchanaburi Station, located near the town center. From there, you can easily access accommodations, restaurants, and attractions.

Once in Kanchanaburi, you can explore historical sites such as the Bridge over the River Kwai, War Cemeteries, and museums dedicated to World War II history. The town is also known for its beautiful landscapes, including waterfalls like Erawan National Park and activities such as river cruises and bamboo rafting. You can go around the city by local transportation. How fun it would be to travel around Kanchanaburi by yourself.

Traveling from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi by train not only provides convenience but also allows you to enjoy scenic views and immerse yourself in Thailand’s history and culture. Bangkok – Hua Hin

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin by train is a convenient and scenic way to reach this popular beach destination. Trains depart from Bangkok’s main railway station, Hua Lamphong Station. You can reach Hua Lamphong Station easily by BTS Skytrain, MRT subway, or taxi. Several trains operate on this route, including ordinary, rapid, and special express trains. 

The journey takes approximately 4-5 hours, depending on the type of train and stops along the way.

Trains depart throughout the day, with multiple options to choose from. It’s advisable to check the current schedule and availability, especially during weekends or holidays. Tickets can be purchased at Hua Lamphong Station or in advance through the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) website or authorized travel agencies. 

Booking in advance is recommended, especially for weekends and peak travel seasons. Trains offer various classes, including third-class seats, second-class air-conditioned seats, and sometimes sleeper options. Choose a class that suits your comfort and budget preferences.

Enjoy picturesque views of rural Thailand, including rice fields, villages, and coastal landscapes as you approach Hua Hin. The train will arrive at Hua Hin Station, located near the town center. From there, you can easily access hotels, resorts, restaurants, and the beach. 

Hua Hin offers a range of attractions, including beautiful beaches, water activities, golf courses, night markets, and cultural sites like the Hua Hin Railway Station and Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park. It’s a popular destination for both relaxation and exploration.

Bangkok -Saraburi

Saraburi tickets can be purchased at Hua Lamphong Station or in advance through the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) website or authorized travel agencies. It’s advisable to book in advance, especially during weekends or peak travel seasons.

The most famous is Phra Phutthabat Temple, where is a large footprint believed to be that of Lord Buddha. This footprint is a revered object of worship for Buddhists and pilgrims who visit the temple to pay their respects. 

The temple is set amidst serene natural surroundings, offering scenic views of Saraburi’s countryside and nearby mountains. You can explore nearby caves, waterfalls, and scenic landscapes that are characteristic of Saraburi Province.

Far from Bangkok

If you have the time to travel a little further out of the city, there are amazing locations that you can find by train. Using the train is a simpler way of ‘escaping’ the city and seeing something new. You don’t have to worry about driving around aimlessly or getting lost.

Bangkok-Chiang Mai 

Chiang Mai is trendy and a fun place to experience. It has over 300 temples that will keep you busy from day to night exploring to. If you want something a little more high energy, Chiang Mai also offers a ton of outdoor activities such as white water rafting. The city also has spas and other places for you to relax if you’re looking to simply just get away.

The journey takes approximately 11 to 14 hours, depending on the type of train and stops along the way. Overnight trains are popular options for travelers, allowing you to save on accommodation costs and maximize daytime sightseeing.

Route starting

Trains depart from Bangkok’s main railway station, Hua Lamphong Station. You can reach Hua Lamphong Station easily by BTS Skytrain, MRT subway, or taxi. Choose from different classes such as third-class seats, second-class air-conditioned seats, and sleeper cabins. Sleeper trains offer a more comfortable overnight experience with options for private cabins. The route passes through historic towns such as Ayutthaya, Lampang, and Uttaradit. If you take the overnight train, you will not see any scenic view.

Buying tickets in advance is recommended, you can buy directly from Hua Lam Pong or buy online. The route is popular with Thai tourist and foreigners.

Chiang Mai, with its rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and vibrant local life, offers a diverse range of experiences for travelers. Whether you are seeking adventure, cultural immersion, or relaxation, this northern Thai city has something to offer everyone.

Let’s start you visit  the iconic temples such as Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Wat Chedi Luang, then Explore the local markets like the Night Bazaar and Sunday Walking Street for unique crafts and delicious street food. Or even more fun, you can ride elephant, oh yes it’s super exciting activity . Probably, you are going to ride Oxcart instead, fun ride too. Taking a cooking class is recommended or get some Thai massage after day long trip. This is only my experience view travelling to Chiang Mai shortly, but I have so much impression stamped in my heart. I would like to go back to Chiang Mai again and again.

Bangkok-(Chiang Mai)Chiang Rai 

Chiang Rai is next to Chiang Mai, therefore you can take a train or bus from Chiang Mai. It is a good idea to visit Chiang Mai first, then go to Chiang Rai after . 

Chiang Rai offers a variety of attractions including the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), also known as the White Temple. 

White Temple

The temple is the brainchild of Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, who designed and funded its construction. His vision blends traditional Thai architectural elements with contemporary artistic expressions. Wow…I said this word when I walked into the temple. It is so beautiful and I am so happy that I got to visit this temple. I would never forget ever how wonderful it touches my heart.

Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) 

Temple of the Dancing Tiger, Black House (Baan Dam Museum), and the Golden Triangle. 

Chiang Rai is a destination that offers a rich blend of cultural, historical, and natural attractions. From its unique temples and vibrant markets to its stunning landscapes and hill tribe cultures, Chiang Rai provides a diverse and memorable travel experience.

Bangkok-Surat Thani

Let’s go down south to Surat Thani, trains depart from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station. Surat Thani Railway Station (often referred to as Phunphin Railway Station) is the arrival point, located about 15 kilometers from Surat Thani city center. The journey takes approximately 8 to 12 hours, depending on the type of train and stops along the way. Overnight trains are a popular choice, allowing you to sleep through the journey and arrive refreshed in the morning.

From the station, you can take a bus, taxi, or tuk-tuk to reach the city center or other destinations like the pier for ferries to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao.  Surat Thani, often considered the gateway to the islands of the Gulf of Thailand, has much to offer in its own right. From lush national parks and vibrant markets to serene temples and local cultural experiences, there’s plenty to see and do.

What more to see in Surat Thani are 

Khao Sok National Park, one of Thailand’s oldest and most diverse national parks, Khao Sok is home to dense rainforests, towering limestone cliffs, and the stunning Cheow Lan Lake.

– Cheow Lan Lake (Ratchaprapha Dam) A man-made lake known for its emerald waters and floating bungalows.

– Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya, An ancient temple dating back to the 7th century, showcasing Srivijaya architecture.

– Surat Thani Night Market, A bustling market offering a variety of local street food, clothing, accessories, and souvenirs.

-Tapi River and Surat Thani City Pillar Shrine, Take a boat tour on the Tapi River to enjoy the natural scenery and observe local life along the riverbanks. Then, visit the City Pillar Shrine, an important spiritual site for the locals, beautifully decorated and well-maintained.

– Ban Ta Khun Hot Springs, located near Khao Sok National Park, these natural hot springs offer a relaxing experience amidst nature. Ideal for unwinding after a day of trekking or exploring.

Surat Thani offers a diverse range of attractions and activities, from exploring ancient temples and bustling markets to enjoying natural parks and hot springs. Whether you’re using it as a base to visit nearby islands or delving into its own unique charms, Surat Thani promises an enriching travel experience.

Bangkok-Nong Kai

Trains depart from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station. The destination station is Nong Khai Railway Station, which is located near the border with Laos. There are several types of trains operating on this route, including ordinary, rapid, express, and special express trains

Overnight trains are a popular choice, allowing you to sleep through the journey and arrive refreshed in the morning. When you arrive Nong Khai the station, you can take a tuk-tuk, taxi, or local bus to reach your accommodation or explore the city.

In Nong Khai, there are many beautiful sites to visit , such as ; 

Sala Keoku (Buddha Park) 

An eclectic sculpture park filled with massive statues of Buddhist and Hindu deities, created by the visionary artist Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat. You will see the giant reclining Buddha, the Wheel of Life sculpture, and the seven-headed naga.

Wat Pho Chai 

The most important temple in Nong Khai, housing the highly revered Luang Phor Phra Sai Buddha image.

Tha Sadet Market

A bustling market along the Mekong River, known for its wide array of goods, from local handicrafts to fresh produce.

Nong Khai Aquarium (Aquarium Nong Khai) A large freshwater aquarium showcasing fish species from the Mekong River and beyond.

Phra That Klang Nam , A revered stupa located in the middle of the Mekong River, visible during the dry season.

Wat Lamduan 

A hilltop temple offering panoramic views of the Mekong River and Nong Khai town. Stunning sunsets, peaceful surroundings, and beautiful temple grounds.

Indochina Market 

A lively market with goods from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and China. Shop for a variety of products including electronics, clothing, and household items.

Nong Khai is a destination rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. From exploring unique sculptures at Sala Keoku to enjoying the vibrant markets and serene temples, there is something for every traveler.

From Nong Khai If you wish to sample a different country altogether, you can travel by train to the capital of Laos: Vientiane. Not only is it the capital, but it is also the largest city in Laos. 

It is situated on the banks of the Mekong River. Near to the city is Buddha Park which is a beautiful garden with over 200 statues scattered about depicting the gods and monsters of Hindu and Buddha myths.

Bangkok – Ubonratchathani 

Traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani by train is a scenic and enjoyable journey, offering a glimpse of Thailand’s countryside. Trains leave from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok. Trains arrive at Ubon Ratchathani Railway Station, which is located in Warin Chamrap District, just across the Mun River from Ubon Ratchathani city center. 

The journey takes approximately 10 to 12 hours, depending on the type of train and number of stops. At the final stop, Tuk-tuks, motorbike taxis, and songthaews are available for transportation to the city center and other destinations.

Ubon Ratchathani, located in northeastern Thailand (Isaan), is a province rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty, making it an attractive destination for travelers. Why not visit Ubon Ratchathani once when you have a chance to, many things to do and witness. Isaan people are friendly, Isaan Food is yummy…if you are not a hot chili pepper love. Just SAY it!!! I visit Ubon Ratchathani a few times, but I never get enough fun, I have to go back again for sure . Here are some famous sight you should visit ;
